  1. In biology, a single-celled organism which
  2. has a eukaryotic cell, but which is not
  3. member of the plant, fungal, or animal
  4. kingdoms. The main protists are protozoa.
  5. Single-celled photosynthetic organisms, such
  6. as diatoms and dinoflagellates, are
  7. classified as protists or algae. Recently the
  8. term has also been used for members of the
  9. kingdom Protoctista, which features in
  10. certain five-kingdom classifications of the
  11. living world. This kingdom may include slime
  12. moulds, all algae (seaweeds as well as
  13. unicellular forms), and protozoa.
